There’s a new intensity in WWE 2K14, as the Ultimate Warrior has been announced as the pre-order DLC character. The Ultimate One isn’t the only new part of the annual franchise, though--there are plenty of tweaks that will make both casual and hardcore wrestling fans smile from ear to ear as they're bashed over the head with a chair. Gameplay has seen some improvements, with the biggest alteration being an overhaul of the reversal system. The infinite chain of counters is gone; now your wrestler will counter with a high impact move and the match with continue. Strikes are faster than before, enhancing their strategic uses. Faster strikes can counter a grapple with less chance of being countered.
A big focus for WWE 2K14 is animation quality, particularly in minor details. Wrestlers walk more naturally around the ring, with more fluid movement than the robotic movements of before. Minor gestures, or what design director Cory Ledesma calls “fidgets,” add to the game’s TV-like approach. After a big slam, a wrestler will look down and tell his opponent to get up. During lengthy matches, wrestlers will wipe off sweat or adjust wrist or arm bands. While small, they do enhance the authenticity of each match, making WWE 2K14 feel more like the real thing than ever before.
